Vedic Astrology

Jyotish — the Sanskrit word for “science of light” — is one of the six Vedangas, the ancient limbs of knowledge that supported the Vedic tradition. As a discipline, it is over 5,000 years old and remains, in its precision and depth, unmatched by any other astrological system.

At The Astral Society, we practice both Vedic and Western astrology — applying each system where it excels and combining them where their insights converge. This guide explains Vedic astrology's foundations and how we use them in our readings.

Vedic vs. Western Astrology

The most fundamental difference is the zodiac each system uses. Western astrology employs the tropical zodiac — anchored to the spring equinox, it maps seasons rather than stars. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — anchored to actual stellar positions, it reflects the sky as it is, not as it was 2,000 years ago when tropical coordinates were established.

Vedic (Jyotish)

  • Sidereal zodiac — aligned with actual star positions
  • Moon sign (Rashi) as the primary identity marker
  • Ascendant (Lagna) as the lens through which everything is interpreted
  • 27 Nakshatras — lunar mansions providing extraordinary depth
  • Vimshottari Dasha — planetary time periods governing life chapters
  • Divisional charts (D2-D60) for granular life-area analysis
  • Yoga system — specific planetary combinations with named effects

Western (Modern)

  • Tropical zodiac — aligned with the spring equinox
  • Sun sign as the primary identity marker
  • Psychological and archetypal interpretation framework
  • Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) as major chart factors
  • Progressed charts and solar arc directions for timing
  • Aspect-focused analysis — angular relationships between planets
  • Humanistic, therapeutic application

Nakshatras

The 27 Nakshatras are the Vedic zodiac's most distinctive feature — and its most precise. Each is a 13°20′ segment of sky through which the Moon passes during its monthly orbit. Your Moon Nakshatra reveals the texture of your emotional nature and instinctive response with a specificity that Sun-sign astrology cannot approximate.

The Dasha System — Timing Your Life

The Vimshottari Dasha is Vedic astrology's master timing tool. It assigns each person a sequence of planetary rulership periods based on their Moon Nakshatra at birth — giving astrologers a precise map of which planetary energy governs each chapter of a person's life.

Unlike transits (which affect everyone equally), Dashas are entirely personal — determined by your exact birth moment. This is why Vedic astrology can identify with precision when a major career shift, relationship, or spiritual turning point is most likely to occur, not merely whether it will.
